Grassington to Kettlewell on the Dales Way

6 miles one way: Grassington → Conistone Pie → Kettlewell
Good paths throughout. Lots of stiles. About 3½ hours.

Overview
.

This walk follows the Dales Way up Wharfedale from Grassington to Kettlewell. Both villages are gorgeous. Grassington is the filming location for 'All Creatures Great And Small' and Kettlewell was the primary location for the 'Calendar Girls' movie.

The whole walk is lovely but the section from Conistone Pie to Highgate Leys Lane is outstanding.

.

All paths are good and you can't get lost - you follow the Dales Way from start to finish.

We prefer doing this walk south to north as it saves the best to last and avoids a sharp climb.

I'll leave it to you to organise your transport to Grassington and from Kettlewell. We drove to Kettlewell, caught the shuttle bus to Grassington then walked back to Kettlewell. There are more buses in the summer but they are still few and far between, so you need to plan ahead.

In Grassington walk up Main Street to the junction at the top by the Town Hall, then go left onto Chapel Street. This is signed 'Dales Way'. After a while, turn right into Bank Lane. Head uphill around the dairy farm until you see this gate into the fields.

From here on I am not going to give detailed instructions, because all you do is follow the Dales Way!

.

Initially you pass through various cattle fields, then eventually it's on into more rugged sheep country. There are loads of stiles and gates and at one point you pass this disused mine entrance.

Eventually you pass the top of Conistone Dib - an impressive valley leading down to the left.

You are now in the prettiest part of the walk and soon you will see the circular outcrop known as Consitone Pie. What a fantastic place for a picnic! The views across Wharfedale are wonderful.

From the Pie just keep following the path and enjoying the view.

Eventually you will see this gate into a wood and onto Highgate Leys Lane. This is your route down off the hill. At the bottom follow the tarmac lane towards Kettlewell past Scargill House until you see the sign posted gate back into the fields. Now its a series of stiles and fields and back into the village, with the route alternating between the right and left of the wall.

I hope you enjoy your walk.
