Burnsall & Thorpe Fell and Cracoe Obelisk
If you have ever had the pleasure of enjoying a pint on the decking behind the Red Lion pub in Burnsall, you are sure to have been impressed by the imposing ridge on the far side of the Wharfe. This walk takes you up on to that ridge.
It then goes around to the west to the equally impressive Cracoe obelisk war memorial and Rylstone Cross. If you have travelled the road from Skipton to Grassington, you cannot have missed these impressive features up on the right-hand skyline.
It is also perhaps the easiest way to get up to the obelisk. (It is possible to go straight up Cracoe Fell, but this is hard. There is supposed to be a path but I couldn't find it. And the lower slopes are boggy and the upper slopes covered with ankle-twisting gullies and holes.)
Once you pass the obelisk, the path onwards to Rylstone Cross becomes hard work if you are not sure-footed. It is erosion-worn, with rocks scattered everywhere. Some other websites describe it as 'easy', but it is slow progress for this pensioner. Look at the pictures and make up your own mind.
Finally, there's an easy descent down to Rylstone and a bus or taxi back to town.
(The downside of this route is that you will need transport to get the start. There are no buses. We got an Uber for £15.)
The track up to the fell from the B6160 is labelled 'Moor Lane' on the OS map. Follow it upwards then at the top, by the barn, go around to the left as it starts to climb onto the fell. Be sure to look behind you at the views.
You are on a path for shooters' vehicles so it is easy to walk and to follow. At the T-junction at Simms Bottom, go right then follow the track as it climbs gently to the north west.
Near Folly Top, you have a choice. We took the wider, left-hand track. You will see the shooters' hides here. As you progress you will see first the mini-reservoir, then the restored(?) chimney. The other path rejoins then it's upwards to the shooters' cabin and shelter. We sat on the rocks here and had our picnic.
Notice Grassington below and Grimwith Reservoir in the distance to the right.
After the shelter, just keep following the same path as it heads first west, then follows the terrain around to the south towards 'Monument Ridge'. Along here, you can leave the track if you choose, and divert to visit the trig point. Then you see one of the Boundary Stones, then, eventually, the obelisk.
There are excellent views down to Threshfield, and the big hills beyond.
As you get nearer to the obelisk, the shooters' track ends and you are on to a footpath which follows the wall. I guess it would be boggy here in wet weather. Great views over the wall down to Cracoe village.
A ladder stile takes you on to the crag and the impressive obelisk.
As you continue south, the good news is that there are lots of impressive rock formations to look at and the views are great. The bad news is that the path gets poorer. From now on it's eroded and rocky. Take your time and watch your footing!
From down below, the obelisk and the cross look to be at roughly the same height, but from up here you will notice how much lower the cross is.
Pick your way down the tricky path until you get to the next ladder stile that takes you to the cross. A great place for a picnic, with lovely views to Rylstone Church below. On busier days you may be surprised as rock climbers appear over the edge.
After you have enjoyed the cross, return to the path and continue south. Soon you will come to the gate at High Bark. Pass through and follow the farm road down off the hills.
At the bottom, be sure to take the gate to the right into the field. You don't want to walk into the village along the B6265 - there's isn't a footpath.
The bus stop is next to the pond.
This walk is mostly on private grouse moor that belongs to the Bolton Abbey Estate and access is on 'permissive' paths. So, with the possible exception of diverting to the trig point, please keep to them.
And realise that the moor will often be closed during the shooting season - August to December(?). I have searched online for a schedule of closure dates but have yet to find one. Please e-mail me a link if you have one and I will add it here.
